Course duration: 60 minutes per session, 1 session per week, 4 / 5 sessions in total
Application Deadline: students can apply / join at any moment
Make-up lesson: Students must notify at least 1 hour before the lesson. A make up class is possible, in another group of similar level which has space available. It should be requested in advance.
Certificate: several times per year we hold Step Method Exams which can be taken to get a formal certificate
Advanced courses: Intermediate and advanced level groups and students who progress well in the initiation groups can move to other groups when advised by the coaches. Several of our students Hong Kong Champions in various age groups
Adverse weather arrangements: In the event of a T8 or Black Rainstorm Warning Signal, classes will be transitioned to an online format.

IM Matthew Tan – Experienced Chess Trainer & Educator
International Master Matthew Tan, a former youth national champion, earned his IM title in 2012. With a background in mathematics and teaching, he blends analytical skills with chess coaching. As a certified FIDE trainer, he brings over a decade of experience, using the Step-by-Step Method to develop players’ strategic thinking.
WFM Astrid Barbier – Champion & Advocate for Women’s Chess
Coach Astrid Barbier, a multiple-time Belgian Women’s Champion and WFM since 2022, has represented Belgium internationally since 2015. She is dedicated to growing women’s chess. A FIDE trainer with over 10 years of experience, she has taught in schools, community centers, and led national teams.
Coach Sunny Lo – Promoting Chess in Hong Kong
Coach Sunny Lo, a seasoned Hong Kong player and tournament winner, has represented the city in international competitions. With 20+ years of chess experience, he is committed to expanding the local chess community with the advantage of a locally born player with fluent Cantonese.
